Wet and wild is the best way to describe whitewater rafting and kayaking in Western Maryland. If you’ve never held a paddle, the Adventure Sports Center will show you the waters on the only mountaintop recirculating whitewater course in the world with gentle rapids in a controlled environment. And if you’ve been paddling for years, we offer private boating day passes.
Just a few minutes up the mountain from Wisp Resort sits the Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI), the world’s only mountaintop re-circulating whitewater course. Choose from guided whitewater rafting, riverboarding or kayaking that can be enjoyed by beginners, families and paddling enthusiasts. Just watching, walk the one mile trail surrounding the whitewater course and watch the excitement as visitors try their paddling skills in the man-made river channel.
So, if you are a veteran rafter, or just curious about the course and what is available high atop Wisp Resort, visit the ASCI facility to see for yourself.

Classic Guided Rafting
Classic fully guided raft trips on the mountaintop whitewater course are in self-bailing 6 person rafts. The entire experience lasts 2 hours, including 20-30 minutes of outfitting and a safety orientation. Guests can paddle through the course 4 to 7 times during the course of the trip. Guests can raft more or less depending on their comfort, stamina and ability. Minimum weight for all trips is 50 lbs. No guarantee on groupings within rafts.
High Adventure Guided Rafting
With a maximum of 3 guests per boat, the High Adventure rafts are more maneuverable and sensitive to the nuances of whitewater action than the bigger rafts. Surfing, eddy snagging, ferrying and general river exploration is central to the high adventure experience. Once you’ve mastered the High Adventure, you might be ready for a trip down Garrett County’s own Upper Yough (Class IV-V). Minimum weight for all trips is 50 lbs.
Inflatable Kayak (Duckie)
The Inflatable Kayak ("Duckie") allows you to take your whitewater adventure to the next level. Developed by whitewater pioneers in Maryland and West Virginia, Duckies allow paddlers to explore whitewater rapids without needing all of the technical skills used with traditional kayaks and represent a much more ‘intimate’ experience with the whitewater. All necessary gear is provided. Minimum 12 years of age to participate.
For a truly immersive whitewater experience, try "River Boarding," where you swim the rapids with a modified "boogie board" and flippers. River Boarding is a great way to feel the flow of the river and surfing a standing wave is a ride like no other. A single instruction session is required; after that you can simply rent the gear and "board" the rapids on your own. All participants should arrive 1/2 hour before their trip time for check in. Minimum 16 years or older and in good physical condition to participate. This is a very strenuous activity!
Private Boater Passes
For experienced paddlers who have their own whitewater equipment (kayaks, river boards, canoes, inflatable kayaks), a private boater pass allows full or half day access when the whitewater course is running. Private boaters must call ahead to verify times.
Introductory Kayaking Class
Paddling a kayak is the most immersive and exciting boating experience possible. Whitewater kayaks are designed for stability and maneuverability through rapids. The ASCI traditional kayak introductory class is the quickest way to dip your toe into this lifelong activity. You will learn the A-B-C's of outfitting, boat nomenclature, entry and exit, and basic paddle strokes. Intrepid students may run the 'big drop' into the ASCI pond on their first lesson. All gear provided.
The 'Eskimo' roll allows a paddler who has flipped over in the rapids to 'right' themselves back up. This is mainly a safety technique that is required for any whitewater paddling that is Class III and above. A roll is required in order to paddle on the ASCI whitewater course.
Private Kayak Instruction
The best way to learn how to kayak or improve your skills is to get focused private instruction in one-on-one or small group sessions. Instead of offering an array of clinics, ASCI specializes in providing on-sight whitewater instruction, using the range of rapids and easy access of the whitewater course. All gear is provided.
The Whitewater Course is located in the Summit Park atop Wisp Resort. From MD 219 in McHenry, MD (traveling north, turn left on Sang Run Road; traveling south, turn right on Sang Run Road). Go .25 mile and turn left onto Marsh Hill Road. Take Marsh Hill approximately 1 mile, turn right on Overlook Pass. At the top of the hill, turn right, Summit Park entrance will be about .75 of mile on the left. The Whitewater Lodge is the first building on the left in the gravel lot.
Guests should arrive 30 minutes prior to their scheduled start time to check-in, complete release waiver, gear up and familiarize themselves with the facility.
What to wear on the whitewater course?
Be prepared to get wet! A bathing suit, board shorts and/or synthetic layers work best. If it is windy in the spring or fall seasons, a splash jacket or some kind of shell will help you stay warm. Comfort wear is available to rent for $14 – this includes neoprene booties, a wetsuit, and a splash jacket. All rafters must wear shoes – no crocs, open-toed sandals or flip flops. Remember to bring a dry change of clothes, towel, toiletries and shoes for after your trip. Showers, changing rooms and secure lockers are available for your convenience.
