Happiest of Holidays

Your friends at Wisp Resort would like to wish you and your family the happiest of holidays!  It's a beautiful day on the slopes with temperatures hanging around 30 degrees and a slight chance of snow.  With Happy Camper and Backbone now open, we are only operating a few snow guns on those trails during business hours today.  Trails we are hoping to have open sooner than later are: Little dipper, Big dipper, Aces, Ridge Run, Over the Edge, and Whip Saw.  Bases are growing steadily on these trails as snowguns run at full force.  We hope you will join us at our new restaurant, Alpine Pasta House, this Thursday through Sunday for a little taste of hearty Italian.  Merry Christmas!

White Christmas on the Horizon

Wisp Resort welcomed 3 inches of heavy snow last night and our guests couldn't be happier.  With 12 trails already open, it's looking like we have a couple good days for snowmaking upon us before warmer temperatures come over the mountain.  The crew has been pressuring up the snow guns all morning in preparation.  We are hoping to have snowmaking up and running a little later today.  With a solid base on the front side, the snowmaking team will continue adding to the base in others areas to try and expand our trail count throughout the week.  The next batch of snowmaking will focus on: Happy Camper, Road Runner, Little Dipper, Aces, Down Under, Ridge Run, and Lower Possum.  Wishing you all a beautiful holiday and we hope to see you out on the slopes!

Snowmaking Resumes in the Mountains

Opening weekend of the 18.19 Winter Season is in the books and after weathering thru 1.67” of rain (yikes) these past 3 days, slope conditions held up well and we are still skiing on a base of 16” – 34”.   Like always, Mother Nature bounces back as does our hard-working Mountains Ops Crew who are poised to begin snowmaking around 7pm tonight when the conditions look ideal.  All of our weather buffs forecast a solid 24+ hour window of snowmaking for this upcoming round.  Go get ‘em guys!

Let the Countdown begin!

From a sunny day to a beautiful night, Wisp Resort is preparing for a projected opening date of Friday, December 14.  The Wisp Resort team has been working overnight the last several weeks to keep the snow guns operating at max power.  Over the weekend, the wind came in fierce from the South which delayed some operations on the mountain.  When winds are Southerly, most of the guns cannot be operated for two reasons: (1) wind coming from this direction pushes the plume out of the gun's back onto itself, which does not allow for snow crystallization to take place (2) wind blows water back onto the gun, which can ice up the shell and ultimately damage the equipment. When these Southerly winds occur, our team re-positions all mobile guns on the mountain, but many snow guns have to be shut down. With that said, the resort was still flowing 2,800 to 3,000 gallons per minute in challenging times over the weekend.  Thank you snowmaking team!  With Squirrel Cage, Face, Central Park (terrain park), and the Tubing Park nearing a desired base, the team has moved on to cover other areas of the mountain and will continue to make its way around throughout the week: Sunset, Wisp Trail, Grouse, Beaver, Muskrat, Boulder, Happy Camper, Backbone, Aces, Big Dipper and Ridge are starting to pile up. Wisp Resort plans to keep the snow guns rolling through Thursday evening when we hit a little temperature bubble on top of the mountain.  The snowmaking team has projected the resort will open with a base depth average of 18 to 36 inches of fluffy snow. Let the countdown begin!

We've Got Whales Swimming!

The Mountain Operations team at Wisp Resort has kept a steady snowmaking flow since late Monday evening.  The front side of the mountain is well covered and the snowtubing park is starting to shape-up nicely.  We accumulated about 3 inches of natural snow overnight that helped cover the mountain.  With temperatures dropping tomorrow, the team is hoping to start building up Main Street in the evening.  Check out those massive piles of snow!

Wisp Resort is targeting to open on December 14th.   More details to come as snowmaking continues...

Here Comes Winter!

We turned on our snowmaking guns around 3am this morning, attempting to push through marginal temperatures and high humidity.  The weather is forecast to be more conducive to snowmaking as the day goes on, so we are planning to push through for the remainder of this window.  We are still anticipating to open by mid-December.

Gearing Up for Another Burst of Winter Weather

With milder temps and a bit of under-developed snow, Wisp Resort has been in a holding pattern on snowmaking since late last week. We are pushing through this last rain event and plan to be back on track with snowmaking operations sometime tomorrow when weather permits. Stay tuned for snowmaking updates.

In the meantime, stop by the newly renovated lobby at The Lodge at Wisp.  This was the final phase of the $3.9 million multi-year renovation project.  Be sure to arrive in the new entrance on the other side of the hotel to get the full experience with Porte Cochere, waterfall and welcoming outdoor fireplace.  We are so pleased with the all of the results and know our guests will be too.
