More Trails Added and More on the Way

The snowmaking team has pumped 121 million gallons of water since the beginning of the season.  Crews have worked for 4,697 hours, systems have run 640 hours.  To say we have put our time into snowmaking this season is an understatement.  Wisp Resort's Mountain Ops Team is anticipating more trails to open in the next 2 days, including East Ridge by early Saturday morning.  We are currently running with 19 open trails: Sunset, Wisp Trail, Grouse, Squirrel, Boulder, Central Park, Muskrat, Beaver, Bear Paw, Roadrunner, Happy Camper, Back Bone, Lil Dipper, Big Dipper, Aces Run, Ridge Run, Over the Edge, Whip Saw, and Face (which is ungroomed). By Saturday we are anticipating having every main trail open aside from Sliders, Loggers, and Oden's Den.  We will continue to work on those throughout the weekend.  The snow is awesome!  Only a few rooms left -- If you haven't booked your hotel room yet at the Lodge at Wisp, make sure to go to to do so before we sell out!  It's a perfect weekend to enjoy some fresh powder.

Powder Days Have Arrived

Deep Creek Lake received about 2” inches of natural snow overnight, adding a cushy layer to our snow base.  Wisp Resort started making snow late Wednesday morning when a window opened with low temps and relatively moderate humidity.  Overnight our snowmaking guns pumped 9,800 to 10,400 gallons of water per minute on a number of trails.  Our guns have pumped 97 million gallons of water to date, with about 24 million gallons since late Wednesday morning. Although winds are still a bit unpredictable, they are losing quite a bit of power, allowing for us to direct snow to certain locations.  We will continue making snow today and for the next several days.  Today's temperatures are a High of 25 degrees and a low of 15.  Great day to get out here and catch a good powder day!

White Out at Wisp Resort

We had a beautiful snow overnight covering the slopes with about 4 inches of natural snow and more falling out of the sky. With snowmaking and natural snow combined, we are now carrying a 14 to 34 inch base on the mountain - perfect for an East Coast Powder Day!  Our window opened yesterday morning at 11am for snowmaking and we've continued to pump up to 11,000 gallons per minute in the last 22 hours.  With about 82 million gallons of water to date, our Mountain Ops crew has been working hard to build up new trails and will continue to do so overnight for this long stretch of cold weather.

Update: January 10, 4pm

Wisp Resort has pumped 88 million gallons of water so far this year with 15 million of it in the past 28 hours; equating to an estimated 577 acre-feet of snow in total and about 98 acre-feet of snow in those 28 hours. Wow - go snowmaking team!! Strong winds are still giving the crew a challenging time since wind is blowing snow back onto the equipment and icing it up. In addition, some of the snow is not landing on the areas the crew is trying to build around the mountain because of the random spurts of Southerly winds. Temperatures are forecast to stay good throughout the night and the winds are forecast to slowly let up. Temperature is forecast to warm up some during the day tomorrow but the crew will still be able to make snow, just not quite as hard as they have today. Our Mountain Ops are doing their best to get North Camp and East Ridge open as soon as possible.  We will update this blog with information as soon as it comes in from the snowmaking team.  Please tell your friends and family to follow this blog to be the first to know about winter storm updates and opening terrain. We are open until 9pm this evening - come play in some fresh powder!!

Terms: "acre-foot" - A term used in snowmaking that refers to a foot of snow covering an acre (or multiple in this case)

Wisp is currently under a Winter Storm Warning (we love those!) with a total of up to 10” of accumulation possible thru tomorrow, Thursday, January 9.   The scene in Garrett County is completely different than the past several weeks and skier and riders are happy about that!  Wisp’s Mountain Ops crew currently has the snow guns blazing on the front side of the mountain. If the wind settles a bit and temperatures get down into the teens as projected, the team will turn on the big guns building snow on Main Street over on the East Ridge this evening. This snowmaking window should last a long 8 days and there is another snow storm forecast for this weekend at Wisp!  Powder Day Tomorrow! – who’s in!?

Optimistic Outlook

Update:  Jan. 8, 6:33pm:  Ski/Ride Operations Closed for Remainder of Day.  We were optimistic all day then Mother Nature decided to throw another curve ball!  Sever lightning has been reported on the mountain and chairlift operations have ceased for today.  We will be back at regular operating hours tomorrow, Wednesday, January 9.

Temperatures and humidity start to cooperate early Wednesday morning and it seems we may have a long stretch ahead of us for snowmaking.  When the opportunity comes around tomorrow, we will back track onto the front runs and patch anywhere that needs filled in.  Once we've delivered a thicker base on the front side, our team will head over to North Camp and East Ridge. Snow is on the horizon!

3-2-1-Make Snow

After 1.01" of rain yesterday, our terrain is hanging on thanks to our Grooming Team.  Next up, our Snowmaking Team plans to take the stage tonight (after a hiatus no thanks to Mature Nature!) with a small window of opportunity.  That crew will churn out as much snow as they can and we are all optimistic that the winds aren't too much of a factor.  Let's Make Snow!

Several Trails Groomed

Our base remains at 12 to 24 inches on the mountain.  We have several trails open and groomed: Sunset, Wisp, Grouse, Boulder, Squirrel, Muskrat, Beaver, Bear Paw, Road Runner, Happy camper, Back bone pass, and Little dipper.  Ungroomed and open trails: Face.  Mother Nature opens a small window this evening for about 8 - 10 hours when temperatures and humidity might dance, potentially giving our snowmaking guns a chance to show off once again.  Temperatures will be hanging around a marginal degree all evening, therefore our snowmaking team will be on the lookout for the first opportunity to turn water into snow.  In the meantime, we are open 9am - 9pm today and are having a blast on the mountain!
