Wisp Resort’s mission to make skiing and riding affordable for everyone continues with the introduction of the Ace's FREE Learn to Ski & Snowboard Program, designed specifically for first-timers ages 8 and up.

About Mr. Helmuth 'Ace' Heise

Mr. Helmuth ‘Ace’ Heise brought skiing to the state of Maryland and a new found passion for the winters in Garrett County. Wisp Resort exists today because of the dedication and personal efforts of Ace himself.

The Team at Wisp Resort is proud to introduce Ace’s Free Learn to Ski program for first-time skiers and snowboarders. “With the goal of creating life-long skiers and snowboarders, Ace’s FREE Learn to Ski/Ride Program offers an affordable and accessible way for everyone to explore the thrill of snow sports,” explained Ski and Snowboard School Director, Eric Anderson.

Program Highlights

  • Free Lessons for First Timers: This program is open to first-time skiers and snowboarders ages 8 and up.
  • Three Lesson Program: Reserve the first lesson that on December 20, 2024 and run daily through January 12, 2025. Second and third lessons are available throughout the season by reservation.
  • $69 Season Pass: After Completing all three lessons, graduates will earn a $69 season pass, valid for the remainder of the 2024-25 winter season.
  • Exclusive Equipment Offer: In addition to the season pass, graduates can purchase a Rossignol equipment package at an exclusive discounted rate.
  • Discounted Pass for 2025-26 Winter Season: Graduates from the Ace’s Free Learn to Ski/Ride Program are eligible for a 2025-26 season pass for only $199!

There’s ample opportunity to get involved with Ace’s FREE Learn to Ski/Ride Program. Sessions will take place at the Yurt Village Learning Center, starting at 9:00 AM for 1.5 hours, and will include everything needed to get started. Participants are required to make a refundable $29 deposit per lesson, which will be refunded once the session is complete—or it can be used to extend the lift ticket and equipment rental for the remainder of the day!

Program includes three 1 1/2 hour group lessons, rental equipment, and lift ticket.

    • Ski Rental Includes: Skis, boots, poles and helmet
    • Snowboard Rental Includes: Snowboard, boots, and helmet

What to Expect

Learn about what you can expect when you sign up for the Ace’s Free Learn to Ski/Ride Program.

Clothing

    • Base Layers (thermal underwear) – Moisture-wicking top and bottom to keep you warm and dry.
    • Mid-layer – A fleece or lightweight insulated jacket for warmth.
    • Snow specific jacket + pants – Waterproof, insulated and breathable for warmth and comfort.
    • Ski socks – Socks made to be worn comfortably with ski boots (multiple layers of socks not recommended).
    • Gloves or mittens – Waterproof and insulated gloves for warmth and comfort.
    • Neck gaiter – Worn to protect your face from wind and cold.
    • Goggles – Goggles worn to protect your eyes from wind and cold.
    • At purchase participants will choose ski or snowboard for all three lessons.
    • Participants must reserve their first lesson between 12/20/2024 and 1/12/25*.
    • All 1.5 hour lessons begin at 9:00am.
    • A $29 deposit is required to reserve the lesson and rental equipment for each session. The deposit is refunded at the conclusion of the lesson upon return of rental equipment and lift ticket OR the deposit can be applied to utilize rental equipment and lift ticket for the remainder of the day.

  • Participants start each session at the Yurt Village Learning Center.
  • Participants should plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to their lesson to get properly fitted for rental equipment.

    • Snowboard Rental Includes: Snowboard, boots, and helmet
  • Ski lockers are available to store valuables and footwear.
  • After completion of each lesson, you will receive an email containing a promo code and instructions to reserve your next lesson.

After completing all 3 lessons, you’ll become an Ace’s Graduate opening up more affordable ways to keep you on the slopes:

    • Graduate season pass – $69 season pass valid for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. Must be purchased at Guest Services by individual completing program.
    • Year 2 Season Pass – $199 season pass for the 2025-26 winter season. A promotional code will be supplied to graduates as the 2025-26 campaign is established.
    • Exclusive Equipment Offer – In addition to the season pass, graduates can purchase a Rossignol equipment package at an exclusive discounted rate.
